NZ Honours Ceremony (6 Oct)
Recently, I was privileged to be among a group of around 60 New Zealanders who recieved Awards from Dame Sylvia Cartwright, the Governor General for services to New Zealand. My N.Z Order of Merit was for services to Maori and Music.

It was a lovely day as I was joined by my parents, Uncle and three special friends. What was astounding was the number of wonderful people in our communities who carry out the most selfless work be it running halfway houses for poor people, working in mental health, promoting safe sex and protection from hiv - just amazing, lovely, humble people. It made me feel thrilled just to be there - and to wonder about the generosity of spirit that others demonstrate away from the spotlight.

It was very special and I was glad that I accepted the Honour in the end. Here is a selection of just some of the lovely tributes I recieved:

Rt Hon Helen Clark (Prime Minister)
I am writing to extend my congratulations on you appointment as a member of the N.Z Order of Merit in the Queens Birthday Honours 2004…thanks so much for all you do for N.Z music and health promotion. (June 2, 2004)

Hon Judith Tizard (Associate Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage)
Please accept my warmest congratulations on your Queen’s Birthday Honour. This honour is a fitting acknowledgement of your significant contribution for services to Maori and music. (June 6, 2004)

George Hickton (Chief Executive, Tourism N.Z)
N.Zs arts and culture are vital in creating a distinct identity for this country offshore. We have certainly seen the impact your music has internationally through a number of events we have worked together over the last few years. Our congratulations and we look forward to working with you in the future. (June 16, 2004)

Cath Andersen (CEO, N.Z Music Industry Commission)
Richard Thorne (Chairperson, N.Z Music Industry Commission)

It is fantastic to see artists such as yourself being recognised in the Queens Birthday Honours and your award is a well deserved achievement. We wish you all the best in continuing to be a pioneering advocate for Maori both through your music and your work to advance the Maori music industry.
