The Riddu Riđđu festival was started by the Sami associations in Kåfjord in 1991, as a Sea-Sami cultural festival. The festival has since become one of the largest Sami festivals and top annual festival for international indigenous peoples. The festival includes music, stage art, literature, children's program, Northern People's program, youth camp, film program, courses (work shops), seminars, art exhibition, market (bazaar), indigenous houses and much more. |

Op woensdagavond 13 juli is er een eenmalig optreden van de succesvolle Nieuw-Zeelandse band Moana & The Tribe. De tuin van Volkenkunde is de plek waar dit muzikale spektakel plaatsvindt. Het is een enorme buitenkans dat Volkenkunde de groep heeft kunnen contracteren en dat ze Leiden aandoen tijdens hun Europese tour. Het optreden van de band past helemaal bij de grote tentoonstelling MAORI over de oudste bewoners van Nieuw-Zeeland die nog tm 18 september te zien is. De tentoonstelling is dan ook extra geopend die avond. Moana & The Tribe is in 2002 opgericht. Hun CD ‘Toru’ kwam in 2003 op nummer 17 van de European World Music Charts binnen. Al snel bestempelden poprecensenten de band als een van de meest succesvolle bands die Maori-traditie en andere muzikale invloeden optimaal met elkaar verbinden. Soul, reggae en funk worden gemixt met traditionele Maori-teksten, de dreigdans Haka en kenmerkende Maori-instrumenten. De thema’s van de songs zijn onderwerpen die voor Maori’s belangrijk zijn, zoals spiritualiteit, de natuur, Maori-tradities en grote historische gebeurtenissen. The Woodland Cultural Centre is a First Nations educational and cultural center. This mandate is from our member Nations; Wahta Mohawks, Six Nations of the Grand River and the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. Harbourfront Centre and its lead summer partner, the Toronto Port Authority, present the inaugural On the Pulse Festival filled with surprises and adventures in music, theatre, film and dance. Audiences are invited to indulge in the unknown and check their inhibitions at the door as former Thunderheist front-woman Isis, New Zealand’s Maori-funk rockers Moana & The Tribe, DJ and beatboxer extraordinaire Scratch from The Roots, and Colombia’s favorite Latin-fusion band Systema Solar take to the WestJet Stage. Another music highlight is Harbourfront Centre's Music Award, SoundClash, presented by NOW Magazine. At On the Pulse, the first of five shortlisted bands compete for $10,000 in cash and prizes. The public can also vote for their favourite band to win following each performance! The element of surprise is also highlighted throughout this weekend with unpredictable flash mobs and a real life Where’s Waldo? game by Improv in Toronto, as well as with interactive improv performances from Second City’s Absolutely Positively Completely Made-Up Show and The Carnegie Hall Show, featuring some of the world’s top improv performers and comedians. On the Pulse culinary events include a special focus on BBQ culture around the world.
